Translations, seeks to blur the lines between quilting techniques and architectural language through interpretations of three-dimensionality and common graphic references used across visual disciplines. The exhibition features various site-specific installations as well as textile artifacts that reference representation and annotation techniques commonly used in architectural practice. The exhibition pushes the boundaries of architectural drawing by questioning the assembly and materiality of such artifacts; plans, maps, and vignettes are constructed out of fabric using quilting techniques. Instead of drawn, the architectural representations are sewn, producing intensely saturated and tactile artifacts.

Through the installation of soft surfaces, the gallery was transformed from a white box into a soft space—a room steered away from its formality and transformed into a social space.

Image‑Space is the first in a series of projects that explore the architectural translation from 2D to 3D. The project calls attention to the shift in the architecture’s relationship to images, arguing that the contemporary design practices mainly produce images of architectural spaces rather than the built space itself.

PLAN, Quilt no.12
18”x18”

This quilt abstracts the plan drawing of the existing column by using the quilting technique called “crazy piecing” . The quilt mimics the concrete aggregate of the existing structure; while the squares in each corner denote the rebar in the column.

construction process

paper-space, 1:1 scale architecture model, is a study of the dichotomies that arise in the process of architectural translation. Its ambition is to unpack the nature of this kind of translation and to reveal its issues by literally translating an architectural drawing set into built space. Through this process of translation, it aims to make apparent the discrepancies that emerge between these two modes of operation.

The installation is a timber structure, marked with dimensions, door numbers, material types, swings, and other annotations. The grid bubbles demarcating the structural axis are converted to a crown of spheres, and all construction notes appear on the cladding.

Ekin Erar is a designer and an educator, currently teaching as a visiting critic at Cornell AAP. Born and raised in Istanbul, Ekin has worked on projects in Europe and the Americas, and her work has been featured in the Venice and São Paulo Architecture Biennales among other institutions including Rice University, Cornell University and Pratt institute. Ekin's interest lies in the making of architecture, through which she blends conventional material systems with experimental assembly techniques. Bridging the gap between manual and digital fabrication, Ekin uses material research as an integral part of her design processes and challenges the ways architecture is translated from represented to real.
